MercMUD

MercMUD

MercMUD, was a giant in the hack-and-slash MUD world. It took the community by storm with its fleshed out code and world, and incredible newbie-friendly design. With almost 40 zones, over 1.5k rooms, 22 shops, no death traps, and PKing / PStealing behaviour curbed by default. Merc was also the first codebase to introduce a MUD School for new players to easily learn the ropes.

It was the largest rival against CircleMUD in codebase deployments for years. This was largely due to the popularity of Merc style MUDs by players, as well as being a vehicle for MUD administrators to easily deploy a fully working and fleshed out MUD with little trouble, while also providing lots of extensibility.

MercMUD also enjoyed having almost as large a snippet community as Circle, and being a sub-derivative of Diku, Circle snippets were often modified to fit into Merc code (with little effort).

Merc boasted low CPU usage, fast performance, short boot time, and high levels of stability enjoying long hours of run-time without crashing.

The official 1.0 release was completed just before Christmas on the 18th of December, 1992. The development team consisted of various individuals, notably Kahn, Furey, and Hatchet known collectively as MERCIndustries.
